Goals and Vision

Background:

A group of local teachers, called the Brightwater Teacher Task Force, formed to create an effective Community Environmental Education Center to be jointly located at the proposed Brightwater wastewater treatment facility.  The study concluded that the center would fulfill three sometimes competing needs. 

·        First, there is a need to site a major capital improvement project, the Brightwater wastewater facility.

·        Second, it fulfills the need for a community center for local gatherings.

·        Finally, there is a need for a regional environmental education facility that will help the community learn to balance the needs of our environment with the wants of its people.  

The task force investigated how to craft the educational programs, grounds, and facilities in order to achieve maximum benefit for the citizens and students of the local community.  Here is a brief summary of their goals and objectives:

Overriding Objective:

·        To make a Regional Environmental Center available for use by the entire Community

Key Goals and Objectives

•     Involve the community throughout in the process of creating and running the Center while at the same time protecting public health

•     Build a Regional Center for students, the community and the environment

•     Build a wastewater treatment plant designed for education and enhancing our environment

•     Ensure Proper Funding and Staffing - to make the BW Environmental Center a desirable facility for education and community

•     Ensure student transportation for education is offered and is sustainable

•     Ensure access to the grounds and water sampling sites via a network of trails and education nodes to provide numerous opportunities for hands-on environmental studies and community appreciation.

•    Landscape the grounds naturally for education and the environment

The Brightwater Teacher’s Task Force has developed a comprehensive plan to achieve these goals and is actively giving presentations on this plan to interested community groups.
