Friends of the Hidden River organized and hosted the Brightwater Reclamation Celebration

Jack Handlin

This event brought together over 200 students, Brightwater staff, and local, county, and state officials to celebrate the first major educational use of the "North 40" portion of the Brightwater site. Former Governor Gary Locke opened the event with an enthusiastic speech. He was followed by King County Executive Ron Sims who challenged those gathered to continue their efforts as stewards of our environment. The next three hours were filled with hands-on environmental activities for the students. They studied water quality, analyzed soils, learned about forest ecosystems, and planted native shrubs and trees. The event was a huge success! Our thanks to the students from Skyview Junior High (Northshore S.D.), Thoreau Elementary (Lake Washington S.D.) and the Environmental & Advenure School (LWSD) who participated. Thanks also to those from NatureVision, CH2MHill, and EarthCorps who helped the Friends staff deliver the learning sessions.
